Rope and monofilament net recovered from Falmouth Wreck

Tuesday 6th April 2021 - Despite the far from ideal conditions and temperatures normally seen in the middle of winter, five of us set out retrieving ghost nets from a wreck site in Falmouth bay. With several of the team having booked leave from work and this being the first trip after the recent lockdown, there wasn’t going to be much that would stop us getting to work.

After two dives in the strengthening cold wind, rain and occasional hail, we returned with a dumpy bag of assorted rope. monofilament net, trawl net and other debris. Another successful outing on our RHIB Casper!

If you come across any lost or abandoned fishing equipment and marine debris, please report it to us so that we can remove it as soon as possible using the reporting button on this website.

The core concept of the traditional two-player Chinese 'Tiger game' is a brilliant, asymmetrical confrontation. It’s fascinating how the strategy for the single 'tiger' piece, which must hunt, drastically differs from the 'men,' who must cooperatively block, making the dynamic of the original Tigro Game a timeless case study in game design.

Fathoms Free is a group of volunteer divers who protect marine wildlife and the environment for everyone's benefit by removing ALDFG (abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and other marine debris from the coastal waters of Cornwall and Devon.

ALDFG is also known as ghost gear or ghost fishing gear, as it continues to "fish," entangling, trapping, and killing wildlife indiscriminately. These trapped animals will die and act as bait, attracting more wildlife in a vicious cycle of death until the ghost gear is removed from the environment.
