Stingray

Fathoms Free have own own Tornado Viking 640 Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) called Stingray.

Stingray has been a dive boat based in Cornwall since the 1990s, originally run by the original Looe Divers and called Looe Diver 1, it was later sold to Starfish Divers and renamed to 'Starfish' before being bought again by the late Mark Millburn of Atlantic Scuba in Falmouth where it was further renamed to Stingray.

By the time it was was Purchased by Mark the boat was in a poor condition with no working engine or electronics and worn tubes. Mark started a restoration replacing the the 200HP Mercury V6 Outboard which can push the boat to over 40Kts and having it completely retubed. Saldy the restoration staled with his untimely death.

Fathoms Free purchased the boat in November 2024 and completed the restoration which Mark had started and she now provides sterling service for our operations. It was only down to our generous donors that we were able to restore and maintain Stingray and equip her with modern electronics and safety equipment.

When not in the water,  Stingray is kept on a twin axle trailer which, means that a team can deploy to any location around the coastline at short notice.

Fathoms Free is a group of volunteer divers who protect marine wildlife and the environment for everyone's benefit by removing ALDFG (abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and other marine debris from the coastal waters of Cornwall and Devon.

ALDFG is also known as ghost gear or ghost fishing gear, as it continues to "fish," entangling, trapping, and killing wildlife indiscriminately. These trapped animals will die and act as bait, attracting more wildlife in a vicious cycle of death until the ghost gear is removed from the environment.
