Sunday, volunteers surveyed and recovered ghost gear from two more sites in Cornwall. Divers reported a wide variety of abandoned or discarded fishing gear on several sites that were visited by divers from across the country during the BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club Kernow Dive Festival a couple of weeks ago.
The first site the team dived on Sunday was the Runnel Stone reef off of Lands End, which is officially designated as the Runnel Stone MCZ (Marine Conservation Zone). Two teams of divers explored the immediate area on and around the reefs pinnacle and recovered a variety of monofilament lines.
The second site dived was the wreck of the Alice Marie in Mounts Bay. From this popular dive site, a large amount of rope and a wide variety of monofilament lines and some gill net were recovered.
As you can see from one of the photos in this post, there really was a wide range of monofilament lines from anglers, long liners, and scraps of gillnets recovered during the two dives. These are a particularly deadly entanglement hazard for a wide range of marine life and also pose a real risk to divers in lower visibility conditions.
Great work once again by our volunteers and thanks to Captain Paul Watson Foundation UKÂ for the use of Shadow. Venturing further afield with a larger twin engine boat gives our teams peace of mind as well as increased capabilities.
